Fear and Respect
Humans are intelligent and are on a higher level
than that of animals. We have the ability of reasoning, thought, progress and
inventiveness. We react to the feelings shown by every person. We will be
discussing about fear and respect and difference between them.
Philosopher John Locke described fear as “Fear is an
uneasiness of the mind, upon the thought of future evil likely to befall us.”
Fear means being afraid of or panic like fear of strangers, heights, dark
places, etc. On the other hand respect is defined as positive feeling of esteem
for a person or entity and also the regard and consideration shown by an
individual towards others. In fact, giving someone respect seems similar to
valuing them and their thoughts, feelings, etc. It also seems to include
acknowledging them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting
their individuality and idiosyncrasies.
There are ways people react to these two feelings.
If a person is a leader and is suppressing and ruling people by strength, power
and tyranny then the people are sure to follow him because of fear as he is
tyrant. But if the same person is leading people by kindness, love and by being
helpful then people will follow him with due respect. That is how fear and
respect differs the feeling and reaction of people.
Still, there is a value to respect which
money can't buy. Though someone's life might not depend on it, there are times,
many times in fact, when another person has the chance to make a personal
decision - a judgment call. When that person feels sincere respect for someone
else, they will make a different decision than if they feel no respect, even if
they have customarily shown a false, pseudo-respect to the person. And that is
the time when he will be outcast because he is not respected at all.
